Some say cloning research brings many benefits to the society while others say it potentially has negative consequences. I am an advocate for cloning research and believe it should be promoted for the following three reasons.
Firstly, cloning can save endangered species. In today's industrialized and urbanized society, increasing numbers of species are at risk of extinction. Some studies have shown large mammals are particularly vulnerable to environmental changes. Therefore it is imperative for us to develop cloning technologies to save endangered animals. Humans have a responsibility to compensate for the loss of wildlife.
Secondly, cloning has a potential to increase food supply significantly. Today, crop yields are in general dependent upon climatic factors such as drought. It is therefore difficult to have stable food supply. However, the development in cloning technologies can help produce so-called drought resistant crops. In addition, cloning can lower the cost for production through decreased need for insecticide.
Thirdly, cloning technologies can save millions of lives in the future. Regenerative medicine, which is highly dependent on cloning technologies, is attracting the attention of medical personnel as well as the general public. Professor Yamanaka of Kyoto University conducted extensive research in this field and the prospect is good.
For the above-mentioned three reasons, I strongly believe cloning research should be promoted. It will have a lot of positive consequences. (223語)
