Should economic development be a higher priority for developing countries than environmental protection? (問題は旺文社のサンプル問題から拝借)
Some say that developing countries should have the right to raise their economic standards at the cost of the environment. They argue that it is unfair to deny developing countries such a right because developed countries now enjoy economic prosperity that came with certain environmental damage. However I don’t think developing nations should put economic development ahead of environment for the following three reasons.
Firstly, we have to take into consideration the possible adverse impact that our posterity may suffer. If developing countries burn fossil fuels in huge quantities in order to fuel factories, power cars and generate electricity, it will inevitably enhance global warming. Considering that developing countries are particularly prone to negative environmental effects such as food shortage, rising sea level and certain diseases, they have to give enough thought to how they will expand their economy in a sustainable way.
Secondly, if developing countries try to boost their economic levels without regard for the environment, that will promote developed nations to do the same thing. China, in my view, is a developed country, but it craves for further economic prosperity. Therefore, if we allow developing countries the right to prioritize economic growth, advanced countries like China will certainly claim the same right, which will only exacerbate the situation.
Thirdly, there are ways in which developing nations can boost their economic standards while minimizing the damage to the environment. Nowadays, clean energy sources are increasingly available thanks to scientific and technological advances. It is the responsibility of developing countries that they transfer these technologies to developing nations so that they can benefit from and thrive on these technological bounties. I strongly believe that developing nations don’t need to sacrifice environment in their attempt to promote economic growth.
For the above-mentioned three reasons, I don’t think developing nations should put economic development before environment. We have to think deeply about our next generations. We shouldn’t encourage developed countries to further expand their economy at the cost of the environment. We have to challenge the notion that environmental protection is incompatible with economic prosperity.
